What’s A Fair Cost To Get A Catalytic Converter Replaced On A 2003 Toyota Corolla

Question: What’s A Fair Cost To Get A Catalytic Converter Replaced On A 2003 Toyota Corolla,
My check engine light came on the other day. Turned out to be from some sensor having to do with the catalytic converter. The Toyota dealer ran some tests and says I need a new one. They want $1600 to replace it. I couldn’t believe it. Is this a reasonable price?

That’s worth a second opinion. It is very rare for a catalyst to fail after 8 years (in fact, there is a federally mandated 96 month 80K mile warranty on catalytic converters) but I could believe there is a sensor integral with it that is bad.

Toyota converters are exceptionally good. The stainless steel lasts forever and they perform very well. Aftermarket converters too often don’t do the job – see the first source.
