I have a 1997 Mercury Cougar XR7 30th Anniversary Edition. It needs a new catalytic converter and the guy at the muffler shop says my car has three of them. How is this?

There are two “pre” cats just after the manifolds on each cylinder bank and one “main” cat in the exhaust after the Wye. Catalytic converter should last the life of the car. Why do yours need to be replaced?
