Do I Keep My Scrap Catalytic Converter With A Replacement

Question: Do I Keep My Scrap Catalytic Converter With A Replacement,
I have a Subaru Legacy 96, so i do not need emmisions. My Catalytic has a crack and its clogged up. My mechanic says he can replace the Catalytic Converter with a pipe, because its an old car and you dont need emissions anymore. When he replaces my cat, can i take it as a junk part and scrap it? Or does he get to keep it???? That would jsut seem downright wrong.

Best answer for Do I Keep My Scrap Catalytic Converter With A Replacement

It’s called the Law! Your “Mechanic” can go to prison for that (If he Is caught)
In a reputable shop, When the Catalytic Converter is replaced, the shop must label the failed converter, and hold it for a period of 30 days, after that the customer can come pick it up if He/She wants to.
This is the EPA law!
