Best answer for Can A Catalytic Converter Cause A Car To Loose Power
The older the converter is, the more clogged it gets. The exhaust has a harder time going through thus creating friction between the exhaust gas and the converter thus it heats up. If you got a new converter you car would drive much better.
If it is plugged
Yes as catalytic converters do their job one way to dissipate the heat due to converting fuel particles to carbon is te generate extreme heat. If too muck fuel or just the fact that after awhile the passages get clogged and plugged up generating more heat and eventually it stops working and the car ceases to run. Take it to a muffler shop and have them check that’s one way to find out what you need to know. there is a 02 sensor that can go bad or create more problem that needs to be checked as well. If you do not know a good muffler shop in your area ask your local mechanic to recommend one. Hopefully he knows a good shop that will give you a square deal and find the problem without raking you over the coals for expensive catalytic converter.
Yes because thats what gives power to the engine
You will have more hp if it’s removed ..
Roger is close, but very confused. THe converter does NOT convert TO carbon, it converts to more harmless VAPORS. ANyways, most converter problems are cause by improper FUEL MIXTURE. The number one cause of that is a dirty IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE.Take $20-30 to the local quick lube and have them clean your THROTTLE BODY and IAC valve to SHOWROOM. This will restore proper AIR/FUEL mixture, as the IAC adds AIR to the incoming injected fuel based on O2 signals. GOOD LUCK!!!
